Propane Tank Refill Policy at Valley Ace Hardware

Not all propane tanks are eligible for refilling. Tanks with a capacity of 100 lbs or less must be requalified within 10 years from their original manufacture date. You can find the manufacture date stamped on the tank’s collar in a month/year format (e.g., 05/09 for May 2009). If the date is followed by an “E,” it means the tank has been inspected and requalified for an additional five years.

Examples:

A tank stamped “05/09” was manufactured in May 2009 and expires in May 2021 (12 years after manufacture).
A tank stamped “05/08 E” was manufactured in May 2008, originally set to expire in May 2020, but requalified for use until May 2025.
